Learn Russian by Singing Songs

Posted on May 22nd, 2010

Sing Russian Songs Yes, of course, you can improve your Russian by singing! No, don’t worry you don’t need any extraordinary vocal talents, all you need is:

•    a CD with your favourite song or it can be recorded (on your computer, iPod, YouTube)
•    a piece of paper and a pen
•    access to the Internet

Let’s get started. While your favourite song is on, try to jot the lyrics down on a piece of paper in front of you. Then, you can compare your notes to the actual lyrics that you can pull from the Internet. Please don’t get very disappointed, if your notes are not exactly the same as the actual lyrics of the song. It is very possible that you won’t get them all right at first. I have to tell you a little secret :quiet: :even I find it hard to catch all of the lyrics by listening to a song over and over again, and Russian is my mother tongue! :-))

Another reason why your notes only slightly resemble the lyrics of the song could be because the lyrics that you found online are incorrect :-/ … so make sure to download them from a reliable source!

If you don’t feel confident about your Russian just yet, and you feel that you cannot understand the lyrics by listening to a Russian song, then you can print them out and read while listening to the song.

The next step would be looking up the new words in a dictionary and trying to memorize the lyrics while singing along. And then you could try to vocalize the lyrics by yourself (that is, if you want to, of course) :-) .

How Will Singing in Russian Help You to Improve Your Language Skills?

It is very important to surround yourself with everything in Russian, if you are serious about improving your Russian language skills. Listening to Russian songs, watching Russian movies, speaking with your friends in Russian will definitely improve your Russian language skills. Here is why:

•    You will learn new words
•    You will improve your vocabulary with modern slang and expressions
•    You may learn grammar (however, this is not always true about the lyrics, some of them do not have very good grammar)
•    Songs in Russian will motivate you to learn Russian
•    You will learn a little more about the Russian culture and music

And Now About the Fun Stuff…

I hope you can find a singer to suite your taste from the variety of Russian singers. I could certainly recommend you a couple of my favourites:

“Nezhnost” by Valeriya

“Salut Vera” by Veleriy Meladze

I hope you’ll have fun singing in Russian! My applauds to you! :)

Good luck in your studies!

Viktoria.
